The Israeli Pavilion at the 15th Biennale of Architecture presented a unique collaboration between scientists and architects, as part of an attempt to expand the interdisciplinary thinking and production in the field of architecture. As a conceptual basis for the exhibition and as an interpretation of the Biennale’s overarching theme, “Reporting from the front”, the curators chose the concept of resilience, which has many appearances in biological systems. The subject is presented through an architectural-research installation, the LifeObject, which combines artificial and natural elements into an organic system that functions as a “living structure”, and responds to its environment. In a biomimetic development process, structural and material characteristics and principles of a bird’s nest are applied in a sculptural installation in space. The installation is based on the use of composite, ‘smart’, and biological materials, and offers to rethink methods of architectural fabrication that simultaneously maintain structured and random principles of operation.
